Susanna Fogel is a screenwriter and director originally from Providence, Rhode Island. For Real, her first short film, which she made at the age of 14, was an official selection of the Toronto and Berlin Film Festivals. In the two decades since, she has written numerous projects for film and television. Most notably, she co-created and executive produced the Lionsgate/ABC drama series Chasing Life, which ran for two seasons.
Her first feature as a director, Life Partners, was developed at the Sundance Screenwriters Lab as well as its Producers Lab. Released by Magnolia Pictures in 2014, the film stars Leighton Meester and Gillian Jacobs as best friends – one gay, one straight – whose codependency is tested when one gets into a romantic relationship. Produced by Independent Spirit Award-winning producer Jordana Mollick, Life Partners was nominated for a GLAAD award in 2014.
Lionsgate released her second film, The Spy Who Dumped Me, in August 2018. The action comedy, co-written with David Iserson and produced by Imagine Entertainment, stars Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon as best friends who find themselves in an international espionage adventure when one finds out her ex-boyfriend is a spy. Justin Theroux, Sam Heughan, and Gillian Anderson also star.
The following year, Susanna acted as one of the co-writers for Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut, Booksmart. Executive produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, the film is a coming-of-age comedy that follows two high-achieving graduating senior girls, who set out to break the rules for the first time and party on their last day of classes.
Aside from acting as a filmmaker, Susanna is also an avid writer of satire and a regular contributor to the New Yorker. Her first novel, Nuclear Family: A Tragicomic Novel in Letters, was published by Henry Holt / Macmillan. She has also written essays for Time and other publications and is currently living in Los Angeles.
