Biography
Natalia Beristain (Mexico City, 1981) graduated cum laude in 2008 from Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica, with film direction as her concentration. Her short film Péces Plátano (Banana Fish) was awarded the Best Mexican Short Film in the 5th International Film Festival of Morelia, and in 2008 screened at the Cannes Film Festival as part of the Official Selection of the Critic’s Week.
No quiero dormir sola (She doesn´t want to sleep alone) is her first feature film. It premiered at the International Critic’s Week of the Venice Film Festival in 2012 and in that same year won Best Feature Film at the Morelia International Film Festival and the first Yellow Robin Award at the Curaçao- Rotterdam International Film Festival. No quiero dormir sola has been shown in more than 40 international film festivals.
In 2014 No quiero dormir sola was nominated for 5 awards, including Best Picture and the award for Best Actrees for Adriana Roel, by The Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences.
She was recently invited by production company Machete Films to direct the last episode, out of eight, in the film Tales from Mexico – La Habitación- .
The Eternal Feminine is her second feature wich in 2017 premiered at the Rome International Film Festival. That same year the film won the audience award at the Morelia International Film Festival and in 2018 the film was nominated for 8 awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and the award for Best Actrees for Karina Gidi, by The Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences. Also won Best Director award at Premios CANACINE.

Natalia Beristain also works as a casting director in feature films, theater and TV series. In 2008, she became the Cast Manager for the National Theatre Company (Mexico). In 2010 she directed for such company Entreguerras (Between Wars), a paraphrase for the stage based on different plays by Thomas Berhard. In that same year she created her own production company, along with three other young female filmmakers: Chamaca Films. She has been the casting director for several plays, TV series and films, including El Violín (Francisco Vargas), Abel (Diego Luna), La Jaula de Oro ( Diego Quemada-Diez), 600 Miles ( Gabriel Ripstein) and Aquí en la Tierra (Gael García Bernal’s production for Fox Premium).
Past year, Natalia directed NOSOTRAS, a documentary short about gender violence and feminicides in Mexico, produced by Diego Luna for the platform El Día Después. Nosotras premiered at Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia in 2019
During Covid-19 lockdown she directed the shortfilm SPACES for Netflix's HOMEMADE: acclaimed filmmakers from around the world channel their creativity during COVID-19 isolation with this diverse, genre-spanning collection of short films.
Currently she is working on her third film: RUIDO.
