For more than a decade, Joslyn Rose Lyons has directed and produced a diverse range of content for film and television, including work with HBO, MTV, BET, VH1 Soul, PBS, Discovery, NBC, ABC, Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), Uninterrupted/Warner Bros. and Apple Music Beats 1.
Joslyn’s work with BET began at Rap City and extended to directing and producing the first Music Matters Grammy Showcase at Creative Artists Agency (CAA) in Los Angeles with an array of musical talent. Additional work with BET included The Message, a four-part documentary on the history of hip hop with artists that included RZA and Nas, producing the BET Awards Celebrity Basketball Game with Lil Rey Howrey, Nick Cannon, Chris Brown, and Angela Yee, and producing television specials and series such as Celebration of Gospel and Joyful Noise.
Early in her career, Joslyn was given a director’s seat at Simmons Lathan Media Group, where she went on to direct HBO Def Poetry. Joslyn directed five music videos for Talib Kweli including Cold Rain, which was ranked the number one video on MTV. Joslyn made her music video directorial debut with The Majors, for Prince ALI (Mahershala Ali), which also featured Hieroglyphics crew, Planet Asia, Keith Murray and Casual, and premiered on BET. A collaboration with MYX TV then followed, where she directed The Path/Honor Code for Prince ALI, featuring Dilated Peoples’ Rakaa Iriscience and Souls of Mischief. Subsequently, Joslyn directed music videos for artists including Chad Hugo of N.E.R.D., SA-RA Creative Partners, Mali Music, Rafael Casal, Too $hort, E-40, Mali Music, and Quadron, among others. Additionally, her music content includes a behind-the-scenes special documenting the making of Erykah Badu’s New Amerykah Part II album while on her Vortex Tour bus. The special featured Karriem Riggins, Shafiq Husayn and Thundercat.
Joslyn’s first documentary feature SOUNDZ OF SPIRIT, which featured interviews with Saul Williams, Common, Andre 3000 and Cee-Lo Green, amongst others, explored the creative process and spiritual connection in hip hop. The film premiered at the HBO Urbanworld Film Festival and screened at London’s Raindance Film Festival and Black International Cinema Berlin, as well as the New York International Film Festival where it won Best Music Documentary before being distributed worldwide with an original soundtrack by Jeff Clanagan’s (Code Black) Urban Works Entertainment.
Her first short film starred Academy Award-winning actor Mahershala Ali, and won at the Link TV: One Nation, Many Voices Muslim American Film Competition. She directed shorts starring Academy Award-winning actor/rapper Common and for Grand Hustle founder Jason Geter and his longtime business partner Grammy Award-winning T.I., Joslyn has directed a series of branded content and short films for their fashion and lifestyle brand Strivers Row.
Joslyn has produced digital specials on Vince Staples for Apple Music’s Beats 1 and as the co-founder of the digital content platform Museum of Light with RESPECT Magazine, she produced segments with The Grammy Museum, Motown Music, Capitol Record, Yahoo! Music and The Public Theater NYC. The platform featured artists including Michelle Williams, Angie Stone, JOI, Mali Music, Mila J, Rafael Casal, Daveed Diggs, and Robert Glasper,
For LeBron James’ digital platform Uninterrupted (Springhill/Warner Bros.), Joslyn created and produced Same Energy. The program was hosted by NBA Champion Matt Barnes, with guests Marshawn Lynch and 2 Chainz.
As a producer, Joslyn’s credits include the upcoming documentaries TRUTH TO POWER featuring Barbara Lee, Danny Glover, Van Jones, Alice Walker and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, TALE OF THE TAPE, featuring Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa and Big Sean, and (R)EVOLUTION featuring Matt Barnes and Ice Cube. WAGING CHANGE, which featured Jane Fonda, was released in 2019.
Most recently, Joslyn’s latest short LOOKING GLASS, starring Los Angeles-based artist Jallal, was positively received, premiered at Sundance London, and has picked up numerous awards at film festivals that include The American Film Award, IndieFest, TopShorts Best Female Director, The Berlin Flash Film Festival, Shorted Film Festival, One-Reeler Short Film Competition, The IndieFEST Film Awards and Focus International Film Festival amongst others.
