Naima Ramos-Chapman tells stories of transformation and understated bravery. Her stories stem from autobiographical events, incorporate magical realism, and seek to render psycho-spiritual realities we can not see —and juxtaposes that alongside the mundanities of everyday life. She’s into moral spastic laughter—the kind that shakes you free from knowing into thinking--that a new way is possible.
In 2018, she wrote, directed, acted and edited on the critically-acclaimed and Peabody Award-winning HBO late night series Random Acts of Flyness where she explored themes about sexual assault, machismo culture in the Afro-Carribbean, and the impact of intergenerational trauma on black women and their families. The show was renewed for a second season. Most recently, Naima worked on the show Betty (HBO) which premieres May 1 2020.
Naima's precipitation into filmmaking began with her first short film, AND NOTHING HAPPENED, which she starred, directed and edited. About the psychological aftermath of sexualized violence, the short film was inspired by her own experience surviving an assault and premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival in 2016. In 2017, the first draft of her screenplay SAD SONGS IN LANGUAGES I DON’T UNDERSTAND, a coming of age story about a dancer, was accepted for the Sundance Institute’s Screenwriting Intensive. It is currently in development. In 2019 her second short film PIU PIU, a psycho-spiritual surrealist thriller, screened at Slamdance, Urbanworld, Blackstar, AFI Film Festival and many others. STILL HERE, an ambitious multi-media immersive installation following the story of a young woman's re-entry into her gentrified neighborhood of Harlem following her release from a 15 year prison sentence premiered in the New Frontier's section at Sundance in 2020. Naima wrote and directed the VR components as presented/in collaboration with Aljazeera Contrast.
Naima continues to shape culture across mediums, driven by her aim to shed light on the most pressing issues of the most vulnerable consequence for herself and her growing community. She is thankful to her artistic homes where she has been given space to grow: her mama's house, in her community of Bedstuy/MVMT, Hillman Grad Productions, the Ailey School for Dance, the Barrow Group for Acting, Art Matters, Rooftop Films, True/Flase PRISM Fellowship with institutional support from HBO, STARZ, SHOWTIME and others. Thank you!
