I am a London based director with a love of meaningful storytelling, justice and civil rights.
Born in London to Ghanaian immigrants, my passion for creativity and film making was evident from an early age. I was a precocious and frankly strange child. Being the only black kid in an all white school meant I often found it difficult to relate to my peers. I found my solace in creating.
I was captivated by cinema. I often waited for my family to fall asleep before creeping downstairs to watch arthouse films on Channel 4 or immerse myself in late might MTV binges where I discovered the likes of Spike Jonze, Jonathan Glazer and Chris Cunningham. I made sure to clean up any evidence of my late night snacking as not to alarm my unsuspecting family.
After several attempts to push me into a career in medicine or law, my strict African parents eventually relented. I studied fine art at London's Central Saint Martins where I began experimenting with video. After leaving art school, I headed into the world of post production to learn first hand what goes into creating films. Although I could not articulate this as a child, what Iove about film is it's ability to catapult you into the mind of another human being.
Through filmmaking I have developed a voice and have been able to express my views on subjects close to my heart; including race, mental health and the portrayal of black women on screen. As an artform, film has the ability to make a difference in the world. From educating us about often taboo subjects, or just providing a different perspective, film has the ability to connect audiences and enables us to look at life in its intricate, perplexing and disordered glory and perhaps understand ourselves just that little bit better.
