Chinwe Okorie is a Nigerian-born filmmaker whose career began with writing and directing comedy sketches and later transitioned into female driven narratives told from a Black woman’s perspective.
Chinwe attended St. Edward’s University where she launched a student-run TV station called TOPPER TV. Chinwe saw an opportunity to showcase the excellent writing and directing skills of the students at St. Edwards. Under her leadership, Chinwe led a staff of 30 students and co-produced a variety of programs from weekly entertainment news to topical comedy sketches. After its first year, TOPPER TV was recognized with the Rising Star award and Chinwe was on the cover of STUDY BREAKS MAGAZINE as their 2014 Next Big Thing.
After college, Chinwe went on to write and direct short films. She has collaborated on well-received female led projects such as the viral web series, NNEKA THE UBER DRIVER, and the WE ARE film series, which is distributed by Issa Rae.
Chinwe’s recent short film titled "LOVEBITES" was selected to screen at the 2020 SXSW film festival. Her background as a Nigerian immigrant has influenced her work in many ways. Her characters are often stepping into new environments and are asked to adapt or evolve much to their chagrin. Sometimes her characters fight private wars with themselves while trying to form genuine human connections. Currently, stories of class disparity and alienation have seeped into her work which she will explore more in the form of satire and horror.
She is influenced by multi-hyphenate creators like Paul Thomas Anderson, Ari Aster, Barry Jenkins, Bong-Joon Ho, Donald Glover, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
