"What is fi you can’t be un fi you.” - Jamaican proverb
My mother would tell me this Jamaican proverb whenever I hit a disappointment in my career. Basically, it means "if it’s meant for you, it will happen for you."
So far, I feel lucky that a lot has been meant for this Caribbean/ Canadian/ American… artist.
My first lead acting role was Rude, a Jamaican D.J. in the film Rude, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
The first play I directed and co-wrote with Maxine Bailey, called Sistahs, was published and continues to be produced all over the world.
The first feature film I directed, Brown Girl Begins, inspired by Nalo Hopkinson’s Black sci-fi novel, Brown Girl in the Ring, is now being developed into a TV series.
How lucky am I! I continue to act in other people’s stories, direct other people’s stories and my own. There is magic, anansi, trickster, tears, love, despair, fear and hate in all of our stories… isn’t it beautiful to tell them and experience them.
