Leon Jean-Marie is a talented and versatile Composer, Producer, Songwriter and Multi-instrumentalist who grew up on the Essex/London border, beginning his music career at Swan Yard studios in the early 2000s. Growing up in South Woodford as a teenager, Leon found his musical interests split between hip hop and garage and later Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix and Lenny Kravitz. During his quest to improve his guitar playing, he became obsessed with Prince.
Learning his craft as a guitarist playing in the house band of a Pentecostal church led to an opportunity to work alongside producer and mentor Paul Harris as an assistant engineer.
Leon then began working on his own material which eventually found its way to legendary Island Records. From there a two-album deal with Island Records was signed, leading Leon on a two-year whirlwind journey of writing and recording with the likes of Mark Ronson in New York and Miike Snow in Sweden.
As his recordings began to circulate, it turned out De La Soul had been longtime fans of his debut album. Leon got on a call with the trio which led to an early version of the album getting into the hands of a clique of hip hop and r’n’b icons including RZA, Mos Def, Erykah Badu all contributing vocals.
Leon has always had a huge passion for film scores, he transitioned into writing for screen in 2014 landing a commercial for Valentino. He has become a fashion brand favourite regularly scoring for Matches, Ports and Pirelli. He recently collaborated on a bronx inspired jazz piece for Anomaly with Free The Work Director Savannah Leaf on a beautiful documentary short for Dicks Sporting Goods.
His sound spans soul, r’n’b, Jazz, neo-classical, sweeping soundscapes and sound design.
