There is a musicality to Ying-Poi’s style that makes this young director stand out. Introduced to music at a young age, it was inevitable she would begin her passion for film with some exciting music videos. And as her passion grew so did her drive.
She discovered her passion for film at the age of 14 and hasn’t looked back. She went on to study film at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Film and Scriptwriting. She then took 4 months to help shoot an award winning documentary called “Strike A Rock” traveling back and forth between Marikana and Johannesburg. Ying-Poi started her advertising career when she joined Velocity Film’s sister company, Bouffant. She was a creative researcher and built a strong base of film and advertising knowledge at Bouffant. She then continued to broaden this knowledge at Massif.
While apprenticing under seasoned directors, Ying-Poi launched Little League Films at Massif, which produces creative and branded online content. This incubated boutique production company challenges traditional structures by creating quality film, commercial and digital content while working with small budgets and within short timeframes.
When it came time to direct, her first piece of commercial work placed first in Adforum’s monthly Top 5 Production Directors. Ying-Poi directed Cadbury Dairy Milk’s, ‘Every toy has a story’ campaign in collaboration with Wunderman SA. She shared how the simple narrative really pulled at the heartstrings. It was heartfelt, honest and for a good cause.
There are strong female characters within Ying-Poi’s films as well as a strong female voice. She strives to surround herself with as many women in the industry throughout her processes as possible.
