Chew Chia Shao Min (b. 1991, Singapore) is a writer-director and producer whose independent work moves fluidly between documentary and narrative story telling.
After graduating from Harvard University with an Honours BA in the Comparative Study of Religion in 2013, she returned home to Singapore and began working in television, as a producer for On The Red Dot, a weekly current affairs program on Channel News Asia. She later transitioned to a freelance career in independent film and was called upon to produce, assistant direct, write, and direct a variety of projects including feature films, short films, music videos, commercials, and multimedia events like the South East Asian Games 2015 Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
Of her short films, May and June has screened at Singapore International Film Festival (2018), Oslo Independent Film Festival (2019) and SF Shorts (2019). She also wrote the feature narrative, Wanton Mee (dir. Eric Khoo), which premiered at San Sebastian Film Festival (2015) and later made its way to the Berlin International Film Festival (2016).
In November 2020, Shao Min’s feature documentary, Sementara, won the Audience Choice Award at Singapore International Film Festival and was listed as one of NME’s 10 best Asian films of 2020.
Shao Min graduated from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts with an MFA in writing and directing over Zoom in the midst of COVID-19.
