Adeyemi Michael is a multi award-winning filmmaker/artist. His work deals with reimagining the African experience, as well as social status and the criminal justice system and how all of these intertwine with race, gender and class. He is intent on carving out narratives that allow the stories he tell’s to have agency, nuance and license to be free from constraint.
An MA Directing graduate from the NFTS; he was made a Broadcast Hotshot in 2014 his breakout film Sodiq gained several accolades including winning a Grierson & Al Jazerra Award and premiering at Sheffield Doc Fest along with nominations from the IDA (US) to RTS (UK) awards. The Producer of the Channel 4 program ‘Lagos To London’ he has worked with BAFTA Award winning companies and has made films for the likes of the BBC, Channel 4 and other major broadcasters as well as independently.
Adeyemi also worked on the BAFTA nominated ‘The Hard Stop’ a feature length documentary funded by the BFI, Bertha and Sundance. He is a Hot Doc's Blue Ice Group fellow and Durban Film Mart alumni (2018) in support of his feature length documentary, At Dawn, currently in production. He also recently directed BBC1’s Murder On the Streets (2018). ‘Entitled’ (2018) was officially selected at BFI London Film Festival 2018 as well as London Short Film Fest (2019) and winner Best Short Film at the Screen Nation Awards (2019).
A BFI Network selected Director Adeyemi is currently in development on his debut feature film; a supernatural fantasy 'Ibeji'. Recent short films include ‘Dark Matter’ (2019) commissioned by Science Gallery and Photographer in Focus Special ‘Aida Muluneh’ (2019) for Nowness.
He's currently directing a documentary 'Black Is Love' (2020) for Channel 4. And is also directing a Sci Fi Fiction film entitled 'The Future Isn't What It Used To Be' (2020) for Film4 written by Courttia Newland (Small Axe) and produced by Fiona Lamptey.
