Mo Scarpelli is a director and cinematographer of nonfiction films. Her work seeks to capture the innate poetry of human life, allowing observation to poke holes in prevailing myths of the world and air the complexities of human identity.
Mo is a selection of Berlinale Talents 2018, a New America Foundation 2018 National Fellow and an International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) Fellow. She has been awarded the Speranza Foundation Female Filmmaker Award, the Lena Sharpe Award for Persistence of Vision and the Reel Women Direct Prize (Cleveland Intl Film Festival). Mo’s feature-length documentary FRAME BY FRAME screened at SXSW 2015, Hot Docs (Top 10 Favourite Films), BFI London Film Festival, Camden International Film Festival (Jury Award for Best Documentary), AFI DOCS, and has won over a dozen jury and audience awards and a Cinema Eye Honors nomination.
Mo has worked with major international non-profit organizations such as charity: water, the (RED) Campaign and The Gates Foundation; she’s worked with brands including the GAP, Whirlpool and Isaac Mizrahi. Her cinematography, photography and writing have been published with The New Yorker, the BBC, CNN’s Great Big Story, The Wall Street Journal, and Africa Review.
