Sam Taylor-Johnson is an English filmmaker, photographer and visual artist known well for Nowhere Boy (2009), Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) and Love You More (2008).
Sam Taylor-Johnson is an English filmmaker, photographer and visual artist.
She directed the Sundance Film Festival-winning short, Love You More, written by Patrick Marber and produced by the late Anthony Minghella which also earned BAFTA and Cannes Palme d’Or nominations. Her feature film debut came in 2009 with the critically acclaimed, BAFTA-nominated, Nowhere Boy, based on the childhood experiences of John Lennon. 2015 saw the release of her directorial feature, Fifty Shades of Grey, which made $94 million in its opening weekend in the U.S. and went on to make over $550 million worldwide.
Taylor-Johnson’s latest commercial film is Givenchy Beauty’s “Gentleman Givenchy,” featuring actor, dancer and performer Aaron Taylor-Johnson. She’s also directed high-profile commercials for H&M, International Women’s Day, Edwin Jeans and more, as well as music videos for artists including Elton John and REM. Taylor-Johnson directed the first two episodes and was an executive producer on Netflix’s “Gypsy,” with Naomi Watts. She recently completed A Million Little Pieces, a feature film starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and based on James Frey’s novel.
She is a former Turner Prize nominee and member of the influential Young British Artists group. She photographed an editorial campaign for Mandarin Oriental hotels and released a photography book for Chanel; called “Second Floor,” the Chanel book captures the private apartment of Mademoiselle Chanel in 34 images. This was accompanied by a solo exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in London.
