Sonia Malfa is an award winning filmmaker who creates visually poetic stories of people of color, women and nature.
Incorporating her love of nature with her passion for visual poetry and storytelling, Sonia directs films that are sensually-captivating and incredibly layered with truth and personality. As a Puerto-American director, her work harks back to the surreal, magical realism passed down through her family and centers on the stories of women and people of color.
Sonia has directed for Facebook (Latinx Heritage Month Campaign), Vogue Italia, L’Oreal, Carol’s Daughter, Citibank, Dis Arts, Maroon World and Booooooom.tv. Her short fashion film SIMONE: A SURVIVOR’S STORY won the Webby Award in 2020 and is currently on the festival circuit screening at the Atlanta Film Festival, 1.4 Awards, One Show Awards and KInsale Shark Awards. Her narrative short, CLOSE YOUR EYES, premiered at Tribeca Film Festival and her films have screened at film festivals around the world.
Before transitioning to directing, Sonia worked as a commercial and independent film/ TV producer including the MTV feature documentary on rapper Drake "Better Than Good Enough" for @radicalmedia and the Youtube Music Videos Awards for Pulse Films.
Sonia is currently in development to direct her feature debut, IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY, which she co-wrote with Trae Harris.
