John Rosario was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York to immigrant parents from the Dominican Republic. His exposure to the city’s tradition of film and art, mixed with his cultural upbringing, would affect his perspective and contribute to the foundation of his craft. Throughout his work, John looks to explore the beauty and tragedy of light and darkness and how those manifestations can be translated into the visual language of a film.
John has been granted the award for Best Cinematography at numerous film festivals around the world, most notably in 2016 at the Festival De Cine de Madrid, a qualifier for the Goya Awards, Spain’s main national competition. He has also been featured in the January 2017 #90 issue of the CAMERAMAN magazine for his achievements and techniques in cinematography. Most recently, John won an Emmy for an LA Dodgers sports feature commemorating Kirk Gibson, starring Samuel Jackson and George Lopez.
John’s major credits include the civil rights period film Son of the South, the true story of activist Bob Zellner, starring Lucas Till and Lucy Hale, Directed by Oscar Nominee Barry Alexander Brown (editor of Blackklansman ) and Executive Produced by Spike Lee. John also lensed Romany Malco’s Directorial debut Prison Logic, a feature film starring Romany and Regina Hall about an ex-convict with dreams of becoming a life coach. Most recently, John lensed Mo McRae's festure film A Lot Of Nothing which premeiredat SXSW2022 and was nominated for an audience award.
John speaks three languages and frequently works on international productions with crews from around the world. His projects have taken him to the small mountain town of Piñas in Ecuador, the streets of Calabria in Italy, the labyrinths of Jerusalem, the alleys of Old Jaffa Port and many more incredible places.
