Gilly’s first short film, Hey Spirit, an expressionistic documentary about cheerleading,_ _screened at Telluride, and was acquired by IFC. Soon after she began directing commercials for clients that include Nike, Sony, Bose, Cartier, Mercedes-Benz, Clinique, American Express, Ford Motors, ABC, NBC, CNN Heroes, Atlantic Records, Tylenol, Bounty, and ESPN. She has received both Emmy and Addy awards for her commercial work.
In collaboration with Vanity Fair and writer David Kamp, Gilly created a ten part series of gonzo, collage-style, essays on film and music called The Snob’s Dictionary. Narrated by Judah Friedlander, the series was honored at the Webby Awards and cited by The American Society of Magazine Editors as one of the best series of the year. Gilly also created a film for Vanity Fair’s centennial; an intimate look at the suffragist movement starring Gaby Hoffman. Her passion for, and expertise with the interview process, has enabled her to work with some of the most fascinating people in film, music, sports, and politics (Mike Tyson, Anne Hathaway, Susan Rice, The Women’s National Soccer Team, Terry Crews, Mary Decker, Emily Blunt, Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Alan Cumming).
Other short form projects include a short film about a queer girl’s crush, for Focus Features in support of their _Kajillionaire_film release, a fashion film starring Samara Weaving, a brand film for a spiked seltzer called Sunboy, and a music video that takes place in a rainbow colored car wash, at night.
Gilly is a fellow of The Directing Workshop for Women at AFI, and a recipient of Refinery29’s Shatterbox grant for her short Are You Still Singing?, which aired on HBOMax, and screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, Palm Springs, Mill Valley and the BFI London Film Festival. She is currently developing a feature length thriller set in the art world with Cold Iron Pictures (Diary of a Teenage Girl, Swiss Army Man).
