Biography
Djaka Souaré is a classically trained actress and filmmaker of Guinean and French descent, based in NYC. Her credits include the HULU BLACK STORIES PRESENT: YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE; directed by TriBeCa 2019 award-winner Phillip Youmans, and the award-winning indie WORDS, opposite Nicholas Pinnock.
Djaka's first short film, JAZZ IN WAKANDA, which she wrote, directed, produced and in which she starred, was an Official selection at Film festivals like Urban World, Nitehawk Shorts, NY African FF, sold to COMCAST and is now streaming on TUBI as part of 'Black Power Series. In 2023, she was selected for the CANEX/AFRIFF program SCRIPT TO SCREEN to develop her first feature, and was one of the 25 screenwriters to win the pitching competition. Her pilot script, AINOAH, dystopian tale of a secret society of multicultural women, won the 2022 Kosinima grant. In 2020, Djaka was selected by the Women’s Weekend Film Challenge to direct one of six short films: FOR LIFE was created by an all-female-identifying cast and crew and won various awards. Previously, Djaka worked at Goldcrest and Saboteur Media in both documentary and narrative films, overseeing projects from financing to casting. She was a producer on the National Geographic documentary HELL ON EARTH directed by Sebastian Junger that premiered at TriBeCa in 2017 and for which she received a DuPont Award and on I WANT MY MTV, which opened at TriBeCa in 2019.
Fierce human's rights advocate, fighting for representation of the African diaspora across all media, Djaka has several projects in development, all celebrating the African diaspora, multicultural voices and multi-dimensional characters. Djaka is a Women in Film Mentoring program, a #Startwith8Hollywood mentee and a Blackmagic Collective Filmmaker Fellow. Djaka speaks English, French and Spanish fluently.
