Biography
Award winning director of numerous commercials and short films. Irene is passionate about all things cinema, documentary cinema, and chilly popcorn consumption in the cinema. Fuelled by the award received from Mexico’s First Lady for her first ever film, Irene came to London to pursue her dreams of directing projects that inform, engage and inspire, since then she has received awards at Oscar and BAFTA qualifying festivals.
In 2015, she made the short film “Quetzal”, which was UK, Mexico and Romanian co-production and was shot in the Mexican jungle won “Best Film” at Les Femmes Underground Film Festival amongst many other wins and festival screenings.
In 2017 she made the documentary, “Laji’in: Birds Without Homeland”, about the reallocation of Syrian refugees in Lesvos, Greece. The film was selected for the BAFTA-qualifying Underwire Film Festival, Oaxaca International Film Festival and has continued to screen across multiple venues and platforms around the globe, such as the acclaimed David Reviews monthly screenings to raise awareness of the refugee crisis.
In 2018, she was commissioned by Bucharest International Dance Film Festival to direct a dance piece “Never Ending” It premiered and won second place at BIDFF and has since been used across online platforms and local communities to raise awareness for abortion laws and education.
In recent years she was featured in Badass.Gal a project by the Young Creative Council to celebrate young female creatives. Earlier this year I was a semifinalist on the Channel 4, 4Stories scheme and won several awards for the films "Lockdown" and "Our Kingdom" that she made during lockdown. She is also in festival circuits with her award winning comedy sci-fi “Home for Aged Time Travellers.
She is currently developing her debut feature film “The Family Way” with screenwriter Jade Alexander (“Night Bus”), based on her experiences of a conservative Mexican upbringing.
