ZANETE SKARULE
Biography
Zanete Skarule is an Amsterdam-based filmmaker. Over the years she has worked in film production in New York and Los Angeles, where she also graduated from the California Institute of the Arts with an MFA in film directing. Her artistic strength is the ability to maneuver between different genres and techniques – fiction, documentary, experimental, and installation – working with both analog and digital film.
Filmmakers like Jonas Mekas, often regarded as the godfather of avant-garde cinema, have left a significant impact on her artistic practice. Zanete worked in Mekas’ New York-based studio until 2012 when she started her own journey as a filmmaker. Her debut award-winning documentary Flying Monks Temple (2017) - a story of a utopian architectural object created for flying performances in China - is still showing in festivals around the world.
More recently, she has been successfully exploring fiction film and music video. Zanete stays closely involved with the art world - her experience with art curation informs her unique vision when it comes to set design, lighting, and costumes.
