Mohammad Gorjestani was born in Post-Revolution Tehran, Iran, and immigrated to the United States during the Iran-Iraq War. As a filmmaker, he mines the resilient narratives of marginalized characters and communities across both narrative and documentary projects. His near-future drama, "Refuge", screened at the Tribeca and SXSW Film Festivals and earned him a place on Filmmaker Magazine's 25 New Faces of Independent Film. His film "Sister Hearts" earned a Cannes Lion, The Tribeca X Award, a Silver Clio Award for Directing, and was nominated for a Cinema Eye Honor. Recently, his film “Exit 12" won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary Short at SXSW, Camden International Film Festival, RiverRun Film Festival, and "Video of the Year" at the Vimeo Awards. "Exit 12" was acquired by Fox Searchlight Pictures. His work has earned 10 Vimeo Staff Picks, 6 Webby Awards, and has been featured by CNN, The Guardian, The Atlantic, and others. He is a two time recipient of the SFFILM Rainin Grant and is currently developing his first feature narrative project. He lives in San Francisco where he is co-founder of Even/Odd, an SF/LA-based cultural studio and production company.
