Shruti Kumar
Biography
Shruti Kumar began her musical career at age 4 as a pianist, and began composing shortly thereafter. She started at The Juilliard School at Age 11 and debuted her first pieces on the "The Late Show with David Letterman". Since, Shruti completed her undergraduate studies at both Juilliard and Columbia University, and her master's degree in film scoring at NYU. While in New York, her work spanned the classical, dance, film, and theater mediums, and she collaborated with groups such as Bang on A Can. Shruti now lives in Los Angeles, where she spent time working at Remote Control Productions (Henry Jackman, Hans Zimmer), and working with pop producers / labels (SONY, XL, Universal) on arrangements & orchestrations in varying capacities for artists (i.e. Alicia Keys, No Doubt, Nas).
Since, as a freelance composer, her work has been used by/for The National Geographic, NPR, The United Nations, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, FOX India, A24, UNICEF, and Google. She co-composed the score to Bollywood feature "Hanuman Da Damdaar" (dir. Ruchi Narain) and indie feature "Trivia Night" (dir. Robert Gregson). She is currently working with director Christian Coppola on his upcoming film "Daddy" and with director Asavari Kumar on her animated film "Passage". As a songwriter/producer her work crosses several genres and she has collaborated with numerous artists, both independent, and at labels such as ANTI and Warner.
She has performed or had her work performed at venues ranging from The Walt Disney Concert Hall to Carnegie Hall/ The National Gallery to (le) Poisson Rouge. In Feb 2018 she arranged/ musical directed a hybrid orchestral set with Shirley Manson (Garbage) and Fiona Apple as a part of the GIRLSCHOOL festival. In March 2019 she composed, arranged, and conducted for BREATHEWATCHLISTENTOUCH: The work and music of Yoko Ono with the LA Phil and Girlschool, which the Los Angeles Times called “A vision for the way forward”. Since, she has conducted for several other shows, most recently the orchestral stage return of band We Are King at the Ford Amphitheatre in Los Angeles.
In August 2019, Shruti launched her global monthly radio series with dublab “Let’s Shake On It”, in which she curates and brings together musicians from divergent backgrounds to engage in dialogue and produces their musical collaboration. From Nov 2019- May 2020 Shruti was based in London as a composer-in-residence at Spitfire Audio and Strongroom Studios, where she was working on producing records for other artists as well as her own album of compositions.
Shruti continues to forge forward with her compositional and production efforts while trying to better the music industry by finding creative collaboration with tech. In light of the COVID crisis in April 2020, she launched Sound Travels (www.soundcantravel.com), a remote hire and educational platform for music industry professionals.
