Agustin Eguia
Biography
Agustin is born in 1980 in Montevideo (Uruguay) while the country was under a strong dictatorship. At the age of 6 months his parents (both members of the student protests) escape from South America with him to avoid being imprisoned and maybe worts.
His first homeland will be Belgium, and it’s in Brussels that Agustin will live his first 8 years. A happy childhood lulled by the political meetings to which his parents assisted with other exiled Uruguayans, Argentinians and Chileans. Already at this young age Agustin expresses a strong interest for art and films.
At the age of eight his parents decide to go back to Uruguay, the dictatorship is over and the call from family, roots and friends is stronger than anything else.
Second homeland and first cultural shock. The Uruguayan society is very different than the organised Europe. Contact is easier maybe but also more abrupt and agressive. Agustin’s adolescence will be difficult in an environment in which he feels he doesn’t fit at first… during that period of introspection he will discover the medium of expression that will become later his passion: video, film and animation. Tons of drawings, first amateur edits, cheap VFX. Possibilities seem endless.
But in Uruguay at that time the audio-visual market was close to 0 or non-existant. Lacking contacts in the field and having the intuition that a strong economical crisis is close Agustin decides to fly back to Belgium in 2001 to be able to develop his creative career.
From there he studied 3 years at the Saint Luc Art School in Brussels, things are getting into place.
Since then Agustin has never stopped working in the audio-visual sector. It has been a long process to be able to get where he wanted to be which is directing films. He worked at a TV station on in the broadcast technical branch, as a Render wrangler for a studio, art director and creative director for agencies to finally become a full-time freelance.
Agustin is curious and like to deep his toes in pretty much everything: animation, vfx, editing, direction, etc. If he could he would learn anything about everything, sadly this isn’t possible and you have to make choices.
That is why he decided to focus on direction and art direction for film and animation. With multiple campaign in his record Agustin is and will remain an active member of the humanitarian scene. Maybe due to his past ? He doesn’t know himself, but subjects related to the human condition and the society in which we evolve are dear to his heart and it the fire that feeds his passion.
In his own words, a film is everything but more than that it’s a team achievement. Without a crew there is no film and thus there is no story.
He hope (modestly) that some of his films may leave a footprint and have a positive impact, producing ripples that will trigger more ripples and in the end change society and make it better.
