Two-time Academy Award-winning documentarian, Barbara Kopple, is one of the most respected and accomplished filmmakers working today. Her feature work has explored the fabric of American life, and her impressive filmography has garnered awards and honors too numerous to list. Barbara’s two Oscars for Harlan County, USA and American Dream make her the only woman filmmaker honored by the Academy with duplicate wins. She has won DGA awards, Emmys, Sundance Festival prizes, and endless critic and film festival honors. Her unique ability to capture authentic human moments places her films—ranging from the dramatically powerful to the light-hearted—beyond category, documenting subjects as diverse as Woody Allen on tour with his jazz band in Wild Man Blues; Mike Tyson’s story in Fallen Champ; and the Dixie Chicks in Shut Up and Sing. Recent documentary projects include The House of Steinbrenner (ESPN); Gun Fight (HBO); A Force of Nature; and the Emmy-nominated Running From Crazy, which follows model and actress Mariel Hemingway, the granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway, as she strives for greater understanding of her family’s history of suicide and mental illness. Barbara’s most recent documentary projects include, Hot Type: 150 Years of the Nation, about America’s oldest continuously published weekly magazine; and Miss Sharon Jones! following the R&B queen as she battles cancer and struggles to hold on to her band and her career. Barbara has also directed episodic dramas and the narrative feature, Havoc, starring Anne Hathaway. Barbara brings her considerable skills at capturing the authentic to commercial projects like those for Bank of America, Dove, and American Greetings’ “Thank List” Campaign – stories of individuals expressing gratitude for those who have made a difference in their lives.
